Making Net-Zero 1.5°C-Aligned Aluminium Possible

Resource Description

This Aluminium Transition Strategy is part of a series of industry transition strategies developed by the Mission Possible Partnership (MPP) to guide decarbonisation of seven hardest-to-abate sectors: aluminium, chemicals, concrete, steel, aviation, shipping, and trucking.

Why This Matters

Aluminum is vital to the energy transition but emissions-intensive. Rapid decarbonization is critical to meet climate targets and enable low-carbon infrastructure.

Key Insights

  • Electricity accounts for 60% of sector emissions; decarbonizing power is the top priority
  • Achieving near-zero emissions requires 3–5x more clean electricity for aluminum production
  • Recommends scaling renewables, boosting recycling, deploying zero-carbon tech, and expanding supply of low-emissions aluminum
  • Stresses need for stronger demand signals, policy action, and international collaboration
  • Highlights support for emerging markets through finance and capacity building
